NLP

Most of us have dreams, goals, hopes and wishes we have put aside, struggled with for years, or just feel stymied when it comes to making them happen. We really aren’t aware of how automated our thinking and choices have become.

Neuro-Linguistic Programming, or NLP, is the science of how your brain codes these learnings and experiences and how this coding affects your communication and behavior. Developed by researchers in the 1970’s, who studied people that made consistently remarkable changes easily and quickly, it’s use has grown to become a staple in sales, business, education, therapy and medicine.

What are the benefits to you?

  • Change unwanted habits and behaviors that are standing in your way.
  • Understand your partner’s and children’s needs and communication styles more fully.
  • Enhance rapport and communication with others.
  • Recognize how others use language to influence you.
  • Identify barriers that have been holding you back from achieving your hopes and dreams.
  • Catch yourself in non-productive behaviors, discover the underlying motives and change your response quickly and easily.
  • Reduce your stress by teaching your brain to work for you rather than against you.
  • Become highly effective at verbal and written communication.
  • Discover the wisdom within you and forever change the way you relate to your self and others.
  • Develop flexibility in your decision making which open up more choices for you.
  • Enjoy greater control and freedom over your own state of mind and your emotional responses.

What is Neuro-Linguistic programming?

The term is developed from the following concepts:

  • NEURO refers to all of your experiences that are gathered through your five senses, then delivered to your brain via your central nervous system.
  • LINGUISTIC refers to your mental processes that are being coded, organized and given meaning, and then transformed into language.
  • PROGRAMMING refers to the patterns of behavior that have developed, as a result of your experiences. Once these patterns are recognized and understood, they can be changed.

For example:
Consider the analogy of “coding” in computer software. The “behavior” of the computer is based on how it was coded, as well as how the coding from other different software programs interacts with the hardware. If there are conflicts within the code, the “behavior” will repeat itself reliably, even when the “behaviors” aren’t getting the result desired. If you know how to find the source of the conflict, then you can instantly help the computer change it’s “behavior”.

How does that relate to you?
Human beings are obviously more complex than a computer, but what about the behaviors you haven’t been able to change in yourself? Even when you know, they aren’t working? By finding the pathway to the “coding” where they originated, and touching that, the desired change occurs easily and naturally.

This is the fundamental difference between what I do and the traditional approaches to human change, which are based on convincing the “computer” to change by talking about the “code” or developing strategies to work around their problems. These methods can work, but they usually take a long time and do not produce sustainable results.
